"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it" as dad used to say. Hopefully we get those two things to hook up and bring us our just deserves after bottoming out from this recent thaw wave. Much colder air and a coastal storm are in the works after that on Thursday and Friday. I am starting to get snarky now, pardon me. It looks quiet and not too cold Tuesday and Wednesday.Īnother colder front is aimed our way Wednesday night, with 2 or 3 inches of snow possible! It could snow an inch, but that's a bit of wishcasting there. New Year's Day Monday we have a weak wave of low pressure sliding to our south with mostly cloudy skies and light wind. Some sunshine and a snowflake or two are possible. A fine evening for first night festivities. Sunday looks OK, with light wind and temps in the 20s. Look for those little wind rows of thin fresh snow, maybe even a refill here or there. Not a solid rapid refreeze, but firming up for sure, especially with elevation. We are looking at about 3.5" of new snow with wind from northwest 15-20 mph and temperatures slowly falling through the twenties. Snow is in the air most of our Saturday, but it lacks vigor. But that delay also means we are not getting a brutal arctic blast, as has been known to happen several New Year's eves lately. It pulls much more reasonable and seasonable cold air and snow clouds over the resort. Mercifully, that weakening low and its upper level energy are lifting out, right over our head this weekend. In fact it's rather tranquil considering all we've been through.įor much of the last week a massive storm stalled in the middle of the country pumped warmer air up the eastern seaboard into Canada. It's snowing and cold again this weekend. But we have reached the bottom of this wave, and there is now only one way to go. In this case a high amplitude wave from that high point fell to a low point now. Extremes are often met by opposite extremes down the road. That was the first week of the season, an extreme powdery snow pattern for not only November, but any month of any year. Here at Jay Peak we were hooting and hollering thing's like "The Best Run of My Life" and "It does not get any better than this". "Normal' is really a balance of extremes. Our so-called 'normals' are actually climatological averages, and are very rare on any single given day. That's a difference of 94° between the warmest and coldest New Year's Eve day in Saint Johnsbury's modern history. But the record low is -40° in 1917, and record high is +54° in 1895. The 'normal' low and high temperatures for December 31 are 12° and 30°. Let's take Saint Johnsbury Vermont, where some of the oldest continuous weather readings in the state of Vermont, dating back to 1894 I believe, are recorded at The Fairbanks Museum. When it does happen, I like to say "we are abnormally normal today." You know how often that happens? Almost never. For example, "the normal high for this time of year is around 30° degrees. When we hear the TV weather person say something about what is normal weather, he or she is actually referring to something that rarely happens.
